Thyroidectomy by Dr. Iraniha
Thyroidectomy is the removal of the thyroid gland. There are several condition such as suspicious thyroid nodule (thyroid mass) or thyroid cancer that requires removal of half or entire thyroid gland. Initially, patient would go through a comprehensive physical examination and blood work as well as thyroid biopsy. Once it is determined that the thyroidectomy surgery is indicated, patient would have full consultation for discussion in regards to surgery. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia through a 2 inch incision in the lower neck. Patient usually go home after surgery or stayed overnight in the hospital for observation. Patient would have minimal pain and discomfort after surgery for few days and would be recovered completely in two weeks. The removal of thyroid is extremely meticulous and requires expertise to minimize the possibility of complications.
Potential Complications with Thyroidectomy Surgery
Thyroidectomy has several potential complications including: temporary or permanent change in voice due to nerve damage, temporary or permanently low calcium due to injury of parathyroid glands, need for lifelong thyroid hormone replacement, bleeding, infection, and the remote possibility of airway obstruction due to bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Complications are uncommon when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. Dr. Iraniha would perform the operation with nerve monitoring technique to identify and protect the nerves during the procedure.
