How I hide the mesh behind the muscle during laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair by Dr. Iraniha
Minimally invasive laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques is the best surgical technique to repair the inguinal hernia. This procedure involves opening the inner layer of the abdominal wall called peritoneum right behind the hernia defect and creating a pocket, removing the hernia sac out of the hernia defect and placing a mesh to patch the defect close. At the end the peritoneal defect would be sutured to bury the mesh behind the muscle. This is the best place to leave the mesh so with creation of scar tissue, mesh could be incorporated into the muscle. But surgical mesh cannot be exposed to the intra-abdominal structures since it could create significant scar tissue and adhesion which leads to major complications. The peritoneal closure is extremely important to prevent the exposure of the mesh to the intra-abdominal structures. This video clip demonstrates how I bury the mesh behind the muscle.
