New minimally invasive procedure to repair diastasis recti by Dr. Iraniha
Repair diastasis recti – Diastasis recti is a separation of midline abdominal wall muscles called rectus muscles (six pack muscles). This anatomical abnormality usually happens after pregnancy but it is also associated with obesity. Patients usually present with abdominal wall bulge without any pain, but some patients complain of lower back pain and abnormal posture due to weak core muscles. This condition is different from hernia. Hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall muscles but in Diastasis Recti there is no true defect in the abdominal wall. The rectus muscles that are normally attached together with thick rope shape tissue called linea alba are now separated from each other and are only connected together with a thin fascia (a thin sheet). This condition, however, is usually associated with hernia and if it is not addressed during hernia repair it can be associated with higher risk of hernia recurrence. Since this anatomical separation of the rectus muscles are usually very long and involves the greater part of these long and vertically located muscles in the center of the abdomen, it makes the diastasis recti repair extremely challenging.
What is the conventional approach to repair it?
The conventional approach to repair this condition is abdominoplasty or tummy tuck that requires a very long incision in the lower abdomen with more postoperative pain and long recovery period.
Laparoscopic repair of Diastasis recti is a new surgical alternative for repairing the muscle laxity and separation of rectus muscles through only three small incisions in the bikini line and offers less pain, less scar and faster recovery. This minimally invasive method not only offers repairing this anatomical abnormality but it also leads to improvement of the abdominal wall bulge and enhanced cosmetic outcomes. However, not everyone is a candidate for this procedure.
