Laparoscopic right Hemicolectomy for colon cancer with Intracorporeal Anastomosis
This is a 73 years old female who presented with one month history of intermittent abdominal pain and changes in her bowel habit. As part of her work-up, she underwent a colonoscopy which showed near obstructing right colon mass. The biopsy of the mass confirmed the presence of adenocarcinoma of the right colon. Patient was taken to the operating room for diagnostic laparoscopy with laparoscopic right hemi-colectomy.
Laparoscopic colon cancer surgery procedures
This video demonstrates the laparoscopic right hemi-colectomy with intra-corporeal anastomosis. This procedure was performed via four small incisions on the abdominal wall. After resecting the right colon the specimen was removed from the abdomen through a very small incision around the umbilicus. Patient tolerated the procedure very well and was started on liquid diet on post-operative day number two and was discharged home on day three. Two weeks after surgery she recovered fully, was able to tolerate regular diet and go back to normal activity. By resecting the colon and performing the primary anastomosis through small incisions and eliminating a large abdominal wall incision, we are able to minimize the trauma of the surgery and therefore significantly improve the post-operative pain and recovery.
