What is the difference between saline and silicone breast implants?

Saline implant has a silicone shell that is filled with sterile salt water during the surgery to achieve the desirable size. It is cheaper but feels less natural. Silicone implant has a prefilled silicone gel and feels and looks more natural but it`s more expensive.

Are there post-operative complications that I should be aware of?
Breast augmentation surgery has potential risks which include but not limited to infection, bleeding and hematoma, skin or nipple numbness, poor scarring, asymmetry, double bubble, skin wrinkling, capsular contracture and lymphoma (ALCL). Even though these risks are extremely rare but they will be thoroughly discussed in detail by the surgeon at your appointment.

Will breast augmentation increase my risk of breast cancer?
No, having breast augmentation surgery will not increase your risk of breast cancer but some breast implants have association with a rare type of lymphoma called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

Will my nipple sensation or feeling change?
Most women will have some loss of some nipple sensation after breast augmentation surgery but in majority of patients it would return to normal after 6 to 12 months. However, some women may experience permanent loss of nipple sensation.

Can I breast feed after surgery?
Yes, you are able to breast feed after breast augmentation. Please make the doctor aware of your wishes to breast feed post operatively to ensure that the proper technique is used during your surgery.

Should I wait until I am done having children to have breast augmentation?
Pregnancy and breast feeding can change the appearance and size of a woman’s breast. These changes during pregnancy may adversely affect the cosmetic appearance of any augmented breasts. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, it is advised to make your surgeon aware of your future decision to create the best plan of care.

When can I drive after surgery?
You are able to drive one week after surgery as long as you are not taking any pain medication.

How long until I can exercise?
Two weeks after breast implant surgery, you may start light exercises but you must wait 6 weeks before resuming strenuous exercises.

When am I able to return to work?
Depending on your job and its physical demands you may be able to return to work after 1-2 weeks after surgery. You should avoid any upper arm movements and reaching for the first 1-2 weeks. You are not allowed to lift, pull or push anything over 5 pounds for six weeks after your operation. Please speak with the doctor to get approval for returning back to work to ensure you heal properly.

What type of scarring will I have after my breast augmentation surgery?
Typically, the scars or incision sites are placed under your breast in the fold that is in well hidden in the standing position. The scar takes about a year to mature and diminish with proper treatment of the area including topical ointments and minimal sun exposure.

Will I have a dressing on after surgery?
After surgery, Steri-strips or a bandage will be placed over the incision sites with glue. The Steri-strips last about one to two weeks before they start to fall off on their own. Your surgeon will remove the Steri-strips at your post-operative appointment. If they begin to fall off before your post-operative appointment, please call our office for instructions on how to treat the area.

What type of bra can I wear?
Your surgeon will assess and advise you on the correct post-operative surgical bra. The bra puts pressure on the implant to hold it in place. The fold under the breast must stretch into the new shape to accommodate the implant. This process may take several weeks or months. Throughout the healing process, a different bra will be required at different points to ensure that the best results are achieved. Each bra is designed differently to ensure that the implant is sitting in the proper position to allow for optimal healing.

Do I still need a mammogram if I have breast implants?
Yes, you do still need to get your regular mammogram for breast cancer screening. It is advised to inform the technician that you have implants so they can capture the best image of your breast tissue.

What is capsular contracture?
Capsular contracture is the formation of scar tissue around the implant that becomes tight and can cause pain and deformation of the breast. Most patients develop capsular contracture within 6 to 12 months from the insertion of implant. Depending the severity of capsular contracture patient may need medical or surgical treatment. Your surgeon will go over all options if you experience capsular contracture.
