What is Laparoscopic?
Laparoscopic surgery is performing the surgical task with special instruments and guidance of a camera through small abdominal incisions. The idea is to minimize the trauma of the surgical procedure by eliminating the large abdominal wall incision compare to conventional open surgery. By minimizing the trauma of the abdominal wall incision, we can achieve less post-operative pain, faster recovery, less hospital stay and faster return to work and regular activity.
In older population and/or in patients with multiple medical problems which minimizing the trauma of surgery could be critical and life saver, this surgical approach also has the potential of decreasing post-operative complications. These results have been proven in numerous scientific studies but I also have had the privilege of witnessing the magical results of laparoscopic surgery in my practice for last 15 years.
Laparoscopic technique allows us to perform almost all general surgical procedures and overall, it is associated with better quality of life during post-operative period.
